Cancer Research UK is launching the second phase of its global Grand Challenge by announcing eight new questions identified as some of the biggest barriers to progress in the fight against cancer.
Funding of up to £20m over five years will give international research teams the freedom and incentive to try, on a large scale, new approaches and to pursue life changing discoveries.
Understanding the biology and genetics of cancer and how to better prevent, diagnose and treat the disease are all areas covered by the eight questions.

Research Infrastructures
“Research Infrastructures” is among the Horizon Work Programmes, and provides funding for networks of institutions that have developed significant equipment resources in particular disciplines. Funded “Research Infrastructures” (RI) fall within 7 categories:
- Energy
- Environmental sciences
- Social sciences and humanities
- Health and Food
- Materials and analytical facilities
- Physical sciences and engineering
- e-infrastructure
The funding can be used to invite researchers from Horizon participating countries to use those resources. Therefore, if your research is hampered by lack of access to “big ticket” facilities, there might be an RI of relevance to you and you can apply to use it.
